Jomon Pottery Chronologies and Frequencies

 

A key issue is to understand how the function of pottery developed from a very limited use in the Late Pleistocene through to widespread use in the Holocene, evident by much higher frequencies of pottery fragments. This graph shows the phases of Jomon hunter-gatherer pottery styles, indicating how the frequency of sherds from sites across Japan varied in relation to the environment.
